Abstract Paintings by Godwin Cutajar

Godwin Cutajar was born in Victoria, Gozo in 1965.  In 1988 he left for Rome where he studied artefact conservation at the Istituto Italiano Arte, Artigianato e Restauro (1988-1990) and successively at the Istituto Centrale del Restauro (1990-1993). During his training, he made conservation work on Art masterpieces such as the 14th century frescoes by Giotto at the Scrovegni Chapel, Padua, the 15th century frescoes by Masolino and Masaccio at San Clemente, Rome, the Arch of Constantine and the Pantheon. He also practised drawing from nude at the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato (1990-1992).  From the end of 1993 he lives in Fontana Gozo.

Since childhood he started painting in figurative style.  Life in Rome however transformed Cutajar`s being and towards the end of the 1980’s he slowly moved to abstract painting. He never really abandoned figurative painting, and his abstract works could hardly be termed abstract as they are built up mainly of a figurative element, the blot (“macchia”).  The origin of the blot in his painting activity probably comes from a theory he read years ago that everything around us could be seen as a series of juxtaposed blots…...

In his paintings, Cutajar depicts spaces in which he finds relief and freedom away from everyday anxieties, disappointments and pain.  Cutajar`s paintings are the coming of Spring after the cold Winter days, a refreshing evening breeze after the day’s heat, the light of a bright star in the dark night, a warm kiss and caress after the tears.  His profession as an artefact conservator, in which he gives new life to a damaged work of art, is very congruent with the line of thought in the paintings he creates.

He does not give a specific name to his paintings, this in order to give the spectator the freedom to arrive to his own conclusions, if any.  His main source of inspiration is Nature, God’s supreme masterpiece.  Calm and solitary in character, Cutajar makes long walks in the Gozo countryside during which he saturates himself with the harmonious and infinite shades and colours of Nature.

For his future Cutajar dreams of discovering more and more his own true self through painting, everyday.
